Short Story: A Change of Heart

In my story I will illustrate the tale of a girl who was captured as a slave in a foreign country. She is sent to the Coliseum where she is pitted against fellow slaves. In the first part of the story you get a glimpse of the person she is, however after the time skip she is changed by her experiences in the area.
A Change of Heart

The voices of thousands roared above her head. The scent of blood and wine mixing together created a pungent stench so thick she gagged. The crowd was wild, high on excitement as they watched men and women fight for their lives; it was horror. Sitting in the small cell she now called home, she waited for her turn in the Coliseum. The man in the cell next to her had been taken. It was only a short time before the woman across her had followed. She sat stoically at the center of the room too afraid to move. She remembered her family who were worlds away. Would they ever see her again? Would they ever know how she died? A slave forced to fight other captives for the pleasure of the corrupt noblemen? No… they would never know. She swallowed, trying to force down the lump in her throat but to no avail. She tried to calm herself down. To remember the old woman— her name had been Myrai— had who cared for her, before she had died. She had been too old, too weak for the games. They only take the strong ones she smiled grimly at the thought. Of all people to choose, they picked her. She was horrified they had, she expected to die on the block or be enslaved like the others. No, she was worthy of the honor they told her. She looked at her tag, tattooed on the underside of her wrist. 46. She was a number, not worthy enough of a name. Not human enough to gain respect.  Another tag was scorched into the base of her neck, the letter M surrounded by runes; Macula.

She gritted her teeth together, the anger within her welling up. She would return to her family, but first she needed to survive. She stirred at the rhythmic footsteps approaching. The doors to the cell block swung open, banging loudly against the damp stone wall. Then the marching resumed, drawing closer and closer. She stood up. The footsteps were almost upon her. The gate to her cell flew open and several guards entered. They pushed her out of the cell and down the corridor. Her face paled as she peered into the once full cell blocks, all of which were empty.

They stopped at a pair of large wooden doors, each intricately carved with the Tree of Life and the Waters of Death. One of the guards offered her an old gladius that was beaten and bent out of shape; no doubt it had been pried from the cold fingers of the slave before her. She uncertainly clasped the sword in her right hand and another guard strapped a shield onto her left arm before retreating to the side. Slowly the doors begun to open, her heart thumped wildly in her chest as the roar of the crowd surrounded her. She closed her eyes and released a long breath before she took a step. Tack… tack...tack…

The blood pumped through her veins, her heart rapidly beating. She was cheered on by scores of people all chanting for death. She looked to the imperial box where her sovereign stood. His hand was clenched into a fist, his thumb lying horizontally. It hovered in the air for a minute, and then curved down. She turned back to her victim, eyes wide pleading for life, begging her mercy. Her eyes softened and she lowered her sword. She reached out and offered her hand to the slave. A trembling hand slipped into hers and she lifted the slave off its feet. Thank you, the slave gasped taking a step towards her. A look of relief donned the slaves face; she frowned and swung her sword in a wide arc decapitating its head in one swift slice. Blood splattered across her face and her once light hair was drenched in a dark maroon. Her eyes slid down to the wrist of the slave, its tag stamped in bold black runes. 48. She grinned.

Knew You Were Trouble Chapter 3

Just to explain a little, I post the chapters on my Fanfiction account, so if you want to check that out, go ahead here

Hello and Welcome dear readers. First, I want to apologize for the delayed chapter, with the summer school mock-diploma coming up thinks have been busy. I spent the afternoon at the Indigo Bookstore near my house and found myself longing to write more for the story (I was planning to delay a week).

Well without further ado,

I don't own the story Harry Potter or any of the original J.K Rowling Characters, this story is purely fictional and for entertainment only.

James smiled softly as he was handed the familiar object. Sleek black wood, polished and well cared for, that formed the handle lead to the bristles which were soft, yet sturdy. Carved carefully in cursive gold lettering was the edition number 310, the latest Nimbus model in the line Vesta. He mused, while stroking the handle lovingly, of mounting the broom and flying away to feel the cool crisp wind rush around him slicking back his hair, while reaching speeds that only a Vesta could produce. After handing him the broom, Teddy went around with Professor Avalon and the Trisswell students handing out broomsticks and rectangular mirrors of black glass to the students. They were at ease now that the dragon had departed, and had begun to move about inspecting the mirrors curiously and raving about the brooms.

He was handed a mirror by Nicia Rhys, the eccentrically dressed girl who reminded him of his strange aunt Luna. Close up, she looked less crazy than when she first arrived. “Nicia Rhys, right?” he asked, curious about the odd girl and her odd gadgets.

She was tall—almost as tall as he was— 5’9 to his 6’2. Her pink hair was tied in a high ponytail with two strands curling down either side of her face. Her lanky body twisted at the hips as she turned to face him. As she looked up he was met with large brown doe eyes.

“Call me Rhi” she said keeping the contact where others would look away. Odd. He thought, smiling internally. His lack of response made her turn fully towards him; a worried look donned her face, wrinkling the pretty features.

“Sorry, am I making you uncomfortable?” she asked, “I do that sometimes”

“No, I’m fine” he remarked, surprised by her upfront attitude. He extended his hand, “James Potter”

Nicia –or rather Rhi looked at his extended hand then back to her own arms which were occupied with precariously balanced mirrors.  She maneuvered her hand out from the pile to unsteadily shake his hand.

“Nice to meet you James”

“Do you need some help with those?” he eyed the mirrors suspiciously, not entirely trusting their stability.

“Oh would you?” she sighed gratefully. He fell into step with her, helping to hand out the mirrors to the students who were chittering excitedly about the brooms.

“So what are these things exactly?” He asked, waving one of the mirrors around. Rhi’s eyes lit up.

“They’re cellphones, though probably not the kind you’re used to” She passed a phone to Lily.

“Cellphone?”

“You know a cellphone to call, text message all that jazz” She handed out the last few cellphones to a group of third years. James shook his head.

“A cellular device” she said despairingly, “a portable telephone?” she was met with a blank face.

She looked at him with an expression of utter amazement. “You know what a phone is, right?”

“Kind of” James grimaced, “however we use owls, not telephones”, she gaped at him momentarily,

“I’ve never met anyone who’s never used a phone before”

“Well there’s a first time for everything,”

She mumbled what sounded like ‘unbelievable’ and ‘British’. James laughed at the stunned girl, who looked up at the sound.

“Unbelievable” she repeated, shaking her head. “Alright then, here” she reached out and took the phone. James watched as her long slender fingers expertly whizzed over the screen. Holograms sprung from the phone and she begun to click and tap buttons which activated more screens and charts. She reached out to an image of an ear piece and pulled it— literally pulled it— out of the hologram. She pushed a button on the side of the phone and the holographic screens retracted. She handed him the device.

“Come closer” she said and James leaned downwards. She placed the earpiece in his right ear. “Alright now say “Activate,” James echoed her words and he heard a beep.

“Say, call Nicia Rhys” He complied; She then lifted her hand to her own ear and murmured a few words.

“Alright, you’re now speaking with me” she held her hand over the speaker on her device. “Fly, straight above us”.

By then they had captured an audience who watched curiously as James mounted the broom.

“Wow James, aren’t you the obedient one” Rose remarked, a few students laughed and Rhi’s mouth curved into a small smile.

“Shut up” he growled before kicking off. He hovered around fifteen feet above them.

“Alright, can you hear me?” her voice sounded from his earpiece.

“Yeah, clear as if you were right here with me” He laughed, before swooping his broom around and speeding across the field. He heard a cheer rise form below him, while laughter sounded from his ear.

“Enjoying yourself?” she laughed

“Oh, yeah” He replied, “Now let’s see how fast this thing can go”

“This is the Begin Tower” Calliope announced, while gliding into the colossal building. They planned to stay the night in the city, rooming in Trisswells city dwellings. A building known as the begin tower where students of the academy could board while being in the city. Apparently, only the ninth years stayed in the city on a regular base, due to the program where they had a year to pursue individual study.

The towers lobby was decorated with sleek modern furniture broken up with occasional vintage pieces. It had a professional feel, yet comfortable as well. The students buzzed excitedly, looking around with wide eyes. It was more like a hotel then a school building, Lily thought. Signs pointing to the rec room and pool caught many people’s attention. As the group spread out to explore the new room, Lily looked up. The ceiling was decorated with silvery tiles that reflected the activity below. It was nothing compared the majesty of Hogwarts. While the new world was enchanting, Lily longed to be back at the castle. Back home. But she couldn’t stand another year at the castle, at least not until the next year.

“It’s no Hogwarts Lil” a voice sounded from behind her, “never will be”

She froze. She would know that voice anywhere, but she never thought that she would hear it here. She remained frozen, too shocked to move. Footsteps. They stopped directly in front of her. Her head was bowed, she refused to look up. She took a deep breath, and then looked up.

“Oliver” she whispered hoarsely.

Calevera

My Entry to the Brandon Sanderson Fan Art competition "Calevera"

I was inspired by the character of Deathpoint, because of the strange calm attitude he displayed while turning civilians into bones. My Image is done in charcoal to display the "darkness" of the character. The burning paper effect is a nod to the ashes and the Skull to the bones of the dead. I chose to hide the characters face, showing only his smile because the smile most effectively represents his calm demeanor. The color variation of the Skull ND Deathpoint visually contrasts the dead from the living. I named my piece Calevera which refers to the Mexican holiday "Day of the Dead" which is befitting of the events that took place at the First
Union Bank on Adams Street preluding the Great Transfersion, Calevera can also refer to poems written for the Day of the Dead intended to humorously criticize the living, lastly it can refer to any artistic representation of skulls.

Knew You Were Trouble Chapter 2

The following is a Harry Potter Next Generation Fanfiction that I have been working on, Feel free to check out my Fanfiction account Here.

Hey! New chapter!

Special Thanks to Varrick and NimueTheSorceress, for the reviews and follows :)

I don't own the story Harry Potter or any of the original J.K Rowling Characters, this story is purely fictional and for entertainment only.

"Ahh, I hate travelling by port key!" grumbled James. The last few people had just arrived at the landing site; it had taken around half an hour for the entire group to slowly arrive in their little pods. Each "pod" was assigned a port key and a time of departure, leaving in three minute intervals. It was a dull and unexciting process that left James bored out of his mind. He'd had plenty of time to view their landing site; a plain field in the middle of nowhere.

From beside him he heard a little snort "come on James, patience is a virtue" Rose murmured. She was sitting on the grass beside him, an open book resting on her lap. She looked up from its yellowed pages and smiled at him. He sat down and glared back "virtue can kiss my ar—" he begun to retort before swiftly cutting himself off, "Hey Professor Avalon" he squeaked.

Rose looked up at the approaching professor while James stared wide-eyed at the petite woman. She had a tendency to appear at the worst –or best, depending on how you looked at it— times.

"Rose, would you mind tending to the younger students?" her airy and almost musical voice rang out as she voiced her request. She was one of the most beautiful professors at Hogwarts and had many admirers compiled of both students and staff, however she was more than just a pretty face she was also the professor of both Charms and Study of Ancient Runes, incredibly intelligent and a Hogwarts Alumni. She was also the only person in the Hogwarts group to have been to the MDA. She had spent the summer at Trisswell to learn more about the school, and had returned seeming very impressed.

"Of course professor" she replied before walking off to the group of younger students who were huddled together nervously. Professor Avalon turned to leave when Albus, Scorpius and Lily suddenly joined them.

"Professor!" exclaimed Lily, "Why are we in a field?" she gestured to the wide and open area which was now occupied with around fifty students ranging from fourteen to nineteen. James watched as she paused.

She took a moment before answering, a smirk slowly spreading across her face, "you'll see" she murmured mysteriously, before leaving the group of madly curious students behind.

"What's up with all the secrecy?" Scorpius said, his gaze following Professor Avalon. James followed his example and soon the entire group was watching the Professor intently. They watched her flit from group to group checking on all the students. When she finished checking on all the arrivals she wandered through the crowd searching for someone.

James checked his watch and groaned. He opened his mouth to complain when Albus suddenly jumped up. "What the hell?

James turned, he felt his jaw go slack "Is that a—"

"Dragon" gasped Rose.

Descending from the clear blue sky was a large beast the size of two full-grown elephants. It possessed metallic silvery scales that glittered in the sun flashing beams of light into the crowd of terrified students, blinding them to the approaching danger. Its wings were made up of a white leathery material that looked paper thin, yet each pounding beat held the powerful creature firmly suspended in the air. The face which was a combination of a lizard, a sea serpent and a bird housed its fangs of ivory, sharpened to a point; so cruel yet so beautiful. Everything Rose had heard about dragons from her uncle Charlie was true.

The students began to panic, all attempting to escape the oncoming fury of the dragon. They scattered, however a white misty light swept across the field, creating a circle that trapped the students— blocking their escape. Rose stood, dumbfounded for the first time in her life.

She stood as students rushed past her, frozen in shock. Someone bumped into her in the frantic attempt to flock at the wall, to get as far away from the beast as possible. She blinked, whipping around she spotted Professor Avalon, who simply watched the dragon making no attempt to do anything. Rose ran over to her, "Professor! What should we do?"

Professor Avalon turned to her, smiling. "Calm down and look carefully Rose" she gestured towards the landing dragon, who was now only a few feet from the ground. Rose gulped and peered at the beast searching for any details she missed.

"Oh" she echoed, sitting on the back of the dragon was a figure dressed in black. "Does that mean?" she begun, receiving a nod from the woman,

"Yes, we are in no danger, Look over there" she pointed to another figure descending the sky on what seemed like an invisible spiraling staircase. Other student had begun to notice the figures and began to calm down. Now curiosity mixed in with the fear and unease of the crowd.

The dragon had landed and the hooded black figure smoothly dismounted before walking over to the staircase and helping the second figure—a girl— off the stairs. "Welcome Hogwarts Students" The girl on the invisible staircase had begun to speak, her voice resonating in the dome of misty light "To the new world"

"My name is Calliope Veratis. I'm a student at Trisswell Academy of Magical Instruction and I'm going to be one of your guides" The girl smiled at the stunned group; she was very beautiful, long black hair with gray eyes and sharp elfin features gave her an ethereal-like appearance. She wore a knee high dress of black and silver that matched the colors of the mysterious dragon and rider. The rider remained at her side unmoving, his face shadowed by the hood while the dragon stood a few feet away, its tail flicking casually from side to side. It reminded Lily of a cat hunting for mice, and she watched the beast warily. The girl—Calliope, continued to speak.

"You don't need to be alarmed, he won't bite" she smiled again at the wary students. Lily turned to face the girl.

"Won't bite? It's a dragon! Not to mention we're in a field with nowhere to hide or run to, and now some strange mist won't let us try" She exclaimed, causing several students to jump at the unexpected outburst. Albus and James turned in surprise at their sister's anger. Lily gasped as she realised what she had done, unthinking she voiced her feelings aloud. She bit her tongue, mad at herself for sounding scared. She was THE Harry Potters one and only daughter, she shouldn't show fear. She was a Gryffindor she was supposed to be brave, but she sounded like a terrified child. She continued to mentally berate herself, and almost missed Calliopes next words.

"What makes you think we're in the middle of nowhere?" Calliope asked, "Welcome to the magic city, Aldenell" she exclaimed then murmured something into the earpiece on her right. From above, the dome of mist began to dissipate, giving way to blue skies filled with clouds. Lily watched in awe as a city began to form out of the mist. Tall buildings, trees, roads and so much more formed where five minutes earlier nothing but empty fields stood.

The gasping and exclaiming that filled the air was followed by thousands of questions; Lily herself was consumed with curiosity, wondering how it was possible to land in a city. She too would have asked questions, but she was watching the city.

Cars drove past at unbelievable speeds while figures on brooms swept above and around buildings. People on the side walk across the street waved, then dissaperated casually and wands as well as other strange artifacts were occupying the hands of the passerby's. Shopping bags with labels like "The Potion Place" and Quidditch sweaters seemed as ordinary as anything. The air was thick with magic. Even the big T.V. screens were covered in advertisements for love potions and the latest "WizTech" equipment.

"This is a specially designed landing site for port key" Calliope explained, causing the voices to die down.

"The mist acts as a barrier between the city and the site, allowing for safe port key travel within the city," another voice sounded from behind. Lily turned to see three more people approaching—two men and a woman. The woman who spoke was possibly stranger than Lily's name sake Luna. She had bright pink hair adorned with a pair of well used goggles, and wore a silver top with black leggings and a tutu. She wore a tool belt around her waist and it was filled with a variety of tools, many of which were unfamiliar to Lily. In her hand she held a black broomstick that had strange metal attachments. The two males both carried brooms as well, but theirs did not have the same strange attachments.

"Ah, let me introduce Nicia Rhys" Calliope said, motioning to the strange girl. "She is one of our Workshop Majors" She then motioned to the other two "Professor Rimbold, head of the Casters Department and Deisya Volt our Quidditch Captain" Professor Rimbold was a slim man with glasses and Deisya was tall with a serious air about him. They both nodded to the students and joined Calliope at the front.

"Lastly, my brother Micah, head of the Dragonfang Students section" She gestured to the hooded rider. "He's a little shy" she laughed. Micah slipped the hood off as he was introduced, and Lily – along with many others— gasped. If Calliope was beautiful, then Micah was gorgeous.

Hey everyone! I feel like I've done so little this week, I've been pretty busy though. I entered an art competition and that's been taking up any extra spare time I have, plus its Ramadan so I'm dead tired :( Summer school is alright, but I wish I was doing better, we move crazy fast with our work meaning additional afterschool studying... yippee... Anyway, just thinking about school is making me depressed... so here's chapter 3 (I planned another part but I couldn't finish it, I'll try and add it in during the week!)

Okay, So I combined the Chapters 3 and 4 together because they were initially meant to all be one chapter (also, its mostly me just feeding information out in a filler chapter, which kinda annoys me). The plot is starting off pretty slow, but next week should be the real takeoff point for the story. Right know I’m introducing characters and explaining the world a lot.

Please feel free to comment with your ideas or criticisms, tell me what you like and don’t like. I love to hear from you all personally.

If you notice any spelling/grammar errors please notify me and I will fix them!
